Rukungiri, Uganda – A speeding motor truck ended the life of a school-going child in a tragic road accident along the Kisiizi-Kanungu Road in Rukungiri District.

The deceased has been identified as Anita Akanyijuka, 12, a pupil at Nyarurambi Child Development Center Primary School, who was involved in an accident on February 19, 2025.

The accident happened at around 6:30 pm at Nyarurambi Cell, Kahoko Parish, Nyakishenyi Sub-county, involving a motor vehicle UAT 972L, a Canter driven by Ariho Gilbert, 42, a resident of Nyarurambi Cell, traveling from Kisiizi to Nyakishenyi town at the time of the accident.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver, who was speeding, hit the young pupil, who was standing alongside the road with a group of students, and was rushed to Kisiizi Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Kigezi police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, stating that the police were alerted, and the scene was visited, examined, and documented.

He added that the wreckage was retrieved and parked at Rukungiri CPS pending inspection, and the body conveyed to Kisiizi Mortuary pending postmortem.

Maate further stated that the driver of the motor vehicle has been detained at Rukungiri CPS, with preliminary investigations suggesting that reckless driving due to over-speeding was the cause of the accident.
