UNCC Petitions Speaker Among Over Deteriorating National Theater
KAMPALA. The leadership of the Uganda National Cultural Centre has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, regarding the deteriorating condition of the iconic Uganda National Theatre.
Led by Board Chairperson Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum, the team noted that the ageing infrastructure, comprising theatres, galleries, and office spaces, hinders the Centre’s ability to host high-quality performances and cultural events.
During a closed-door meeting with the Speaker, they discussed the need for legislative reforms to support the Centre’s crucial role.
Speaker Among assured the team of Parliament’s unwavering support to empower the Centre in fulfilling its mandate to preserve and promote Uganda’s rich cultural heritage.
The UNCC is an institution , established in 1959 to promote and preserve Uganda’s cultural heritage.
Located in the heart of Kampala, The centre has two main components: the National theater and the Nommo Gallery.
The National Theatre provides a venue for stage performances of different kinds, and also serves as a Cinema. The Nommo Gallery features exhibitions of works of art by both Ugandan and foreign artists. The centre also offers a snack bar, which claims to offer the “best African dishes served with best spices and ambience”, and the Craft Village, where locally made handicrafts are sold.
