Ugandan fishermen at Lake Edward Killed by Congolese Soldiers.

RUKUNGIRI: The territorial police in Rukungiri are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of 2 fishermen at the waters of lake Edward.

The 2 have been identified as Sunday Moses 22 a resident of Rumira cell, Bugangari parish, Bugangari sub county  and Namanya Innocent 26 a resident of Kyehunde village, Bwambara parish, Bwambara sub county.

It’s alleged that on the 08th July 2024 the two together with other three fishermen including Atwibu Mwesigwa, Mukasa Rajabu Midedo, Byaruhanga Apollo, went to carry out their fishing activities.

Both the who are workers of Mugenyi Aisha set off to lake Edward where they spent 3 days upto 11th July 2024 when both prepared hooks to continue their fishing activity in Kagezi area -DR congo. 

In the area one Atwibu Mwesigwa saw soldiers of Congo coming towards them, made an alarm alerting his fellows to save for their life.

They started running in different directions while soldiers started firing bullets and after they reached their meeting point (RV), they found Namanya innocent and Sunday Moses missing. 

The remaining three, Mukasa Rajabu  Midedo , Byaruhanga Apollo and Mwesigwa Atwibu returned back to Rwenshama landing site and notified their employer Aisha Namugenyi and residents over the incident. 

The families and friends went back to the Kagezi area and started looking for the missing until on 15th July 2024, the two were recovered dead along the shores of lake Edward- Kagezi area part of DR-Congo.

The Kigezi Policespokesman ASP Elly Maate told this reporter that a case of disappearance of the two was registered at Rwenshama police station and  now being investigated as murders.

Maate added that the statements were recorded from the survivors, postmortem done on the bodies with the matter also registered at Rukungiri Central Police Station CRB: 830/2024 & 831/2024 respectively.
