Tragedy in Rukungiri, Prison Warder Killed by Security Guard

Rukungiri, Uganda – A security guard attached to S.W.A.T.T Security Limited has fatally shot a prison warder in unclear circumstances in Rukungiri District.

The deceased, identified as No. 16448 L/CPL Ojok Boniface 33, an officer attached to Uganda Prisons Rukungiri who was allegedly shot by Byaruhanga Peter 22, a security guard and resident of Kakabada A cell, Rukungiri municipality.

Sources indicate that Ojok had gone to Babuuze bar and lodge with colleague Officer Otim James to watch a football match and after the game, Ojok stepped outside for a short call.

Shortly thereafter, Otim heard a gunshot and rushed to the scene, finding his colleague lying dead.

The suspect, Peter, claimed that Ojok attempted to steal a generator, while other accounts suggest the two were involved in an argument that led to the shooting.

Kigezi Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incident, stating that police recovered the gun used, which had 3 rounds of ammunition.

Maate added that police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“We can confirm that the incident occurred, and our team has recovered the gun used, which had 3 rounds of ammunition. Our team is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine the events that led to the tragic shooting.'” Said Elly Maate.

The suspect has been arrested, and the deceased’s body has been taken to Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary for postmortem.
