Speaker Among Commits to Help Finding Long Term Solutions For Disasters.
The Speaker of Parliament of Uganda Rt. Hon. Anita Among has pledged Parliamentary commitment to ensuring that there are appropriate measures in developing long-term preventive actions of disasters in Uganda.
The speaker’s comment comes a few days after heavy rains triggered landslides in the mountainous district of Bulambuli last week, where at least 15 people were reported dead , scores injured and up to 113 missing at the time of filing this report
The heavy rains also destroyed up to 40 houses and washed away acres of crop gardens leaving thousands of people homeless and facing imminent famine.
On Thursday last week, the Uganda Red Cross Society said that 13 bodies had been recovered after landslides buried them alive, and the rescue effort was continuing with the death toll expected to rise.
Through her X handle (formerly twitter), Ms. Among conveyed her condolences to the families that lost their loved ones , and expressed commitment of Parliament to lead efforts in devising a long time solution for the disaster prone areas across the country.
“I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones in the Bulambuli landslides. I wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured.” She said
The speaker further commended Uganda Peoples Defense Forces, Teams from the Office of the Prime Minister, and the Uganda Red Cross Society for their effective interventions that saved lives.
