Release Dr. Besigye Immediately, AU Commission Chairperson Tells Uganda

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf has urged Ugandan authorities to release Dr. Kizza Besigye immediately and provide him with full medical care.

Youssouf expressed deep concern over Besigye’s deteriorating health, which led to his emergency evacuation from Luzira Prison.

Through his Twitter handle, Youssouf acknowledged Besigye’s decades-long fight for democracy and human rights in Uganda, emphasizing that his well-being must be safeguarded.

The AU Commission Chairperson reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to protecting fundamental rights, stating that no individual should suffer persecution for their political beliefs.

This development comes amidst growing demands for Besigye’s release from various quarters, including opposition leaders in Uganda, who have condemned his trial in military courts as illegal and politically motivated.

Winnie Byanyima, Besigye’s wife, has also petitioned the High Criminal Division of the High Court, seeking his unconditional release.
