NATIONAL: The Local Government Ministry Permanent Secretary Ben Kumumanya has stated that the central markets constructed under the government MATIP project has greatly improved the socio-economic status of local communities.

The PS was this week visiting the new multi-billion markets (Mbarara and Kabale) built by the Ministry of Local Government to verify the truth after claims that were made that vendors had shunned the markets for being non-functional.

During the visit the Local Government Ministry Permanent Secretary noticed that both markets were fully operational despite the festive Christmas and New Year holidays.

Interacting with the vendors and customers Kumumanya further noticed that Mbarara Central Market generated Sh1.25 billion shillings between January and February last year.

The two Markets were constructed under the Market s and Agricultural Trade Improvement (MATIP) project with Mbarara Central Market now bearing 1,403 vendors and Kabale Central Market with 1,451 vendors.

The Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Programme Project-2 (MATIP-II) is a project implemented by the Ministry of Local Government in municipalities/cities around the country.
