KAMPALA-UGANDA: Police have halted the National Unity Platform (NUP) Party consultative activities after a deadly traffic incident in a procession to Masaka.

According to the Police spokesperson, SCP Fred Enanga said the abrupt stoppage of NUP activities follows a deadly accident at Maya along the Kampala- Masaka Highway leading to the loss of three lives, leaving many others injured.

The accident involved 02 motor vehicles and 04 motor cycles which were part of a motorcade in a procession of National Unity Platform (NUP) Leaders heading to Masaka for consultative activities.

“Whereas Police Leadership met with the National Unity Platform Leadership at Police Headquarters on the 27th May and agreed on how to conduct their consultative meetings, NUP have disregarded the agreed position and continue to act with impunity as demonstrated in today’s unfortunate incident at Maya” said Fred Enanga.

Fred Enanga said that the loss of the innocent lives was a result of recklessness of the drivers and riders who were driving in excess speed without regard to other road users.

He added that the Police is mandated to protect life and property, keep law and order, saying that they will not allow NUP as a party to continue its activities until the matter is investigated and resolved.

“As the government Agency mandated to protect life and property, keep law and order, the police management has decided to halt any further consultative activities of NUP as a party with immediate effect until this matter is conclusively investigated and resolved,” said Fred Enanga.

Police spokesperson further appealed to the public to remain vigilant, observe law and order saying that the safety of Ugandans will always remain our priority.
