RUBANDA.President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has tasked the Ministries of Finance and Agriculture to develop a comprehensive plan for value addition in the production of meat and eggs.

This move, he said, should be the strategic response to the increase in the number of farmers venturing into livestock farming under the Parish Development Model Program.

While addressing farmers and Rubanda District leaders at Bubare Secondary School playground yesterday, Museveni elaborated the need for value addition programs, such as the establishment of factories, to capitalize on the anticipated massive production of meat and eggs by PDM farmers.

“With value addition, we are not only looking at domestic consumption, but also exports especially baby food from eggs and sausages from meat,” he said.

The President also seized the opportunity to educate the gathering on intensive farming techniques, particularly in Kigezi, where extensive agriculture is hindered by limited land availability.

“Since 1996, we’ve been urging people with small landholdings to avoid planting cash crops that require vast tracts of land. Instead, partition your land and undertake diverse projects that cater to your household needs, such as food production and income generation,” Museveni advised.

State Minister of Finance Henry Musasizi revealed that Rubanda District had received a total of Shs. 14.3 billion, which was disbursed to PDM beneficiaries in 70 parishes.

However, Musasizi who doubles as Rubanda East Mp, noted that some PDM farmers faced challenges in accessing water, exacerbated by the rugged terrain of the Kigezi Sub-region.

Ms. Evas Akampurira, a succesful poultry farmer, shared her success story with the President. After receiving a Shs. 1 million PDM loan, she said that she had started with 50 layer hens in September 2023.

After also selling three bags of sorghum at Shs. 600,000 to boost her capital, Akampurira kick-started her poultry project with a total of Shs. 1.6 million. Her project earned her Shs. 7-10 million in 2024 alone, with expectations of even higher returns in the following years.
