KAMPALA-UGANDA: The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF) has distributed 400 motorcycles to veterinary officers across various districts to support livestock and crop disease control.

The Agricultural Minister Hon. Frank Tumwebaze confirmed to this reporter that the motorbikes ease the process of getting the information about the disease outbreak especially in the border districts.

The Minister said that Acholi sub-region has been allocated 200 motorbikes alone due to its higher disease prevalence compared to other regions of southern, southwestern, northern, and eastern Uganda.

He further appealed to the district security committee headed by the Resident district commissioners (RDCs) and the DISOs to look out on the usage of the Motorbikes, so that they can serve according to the regulations.

“Let no district complain that they were not given motorcycles, we will reach there. Use these tools of work efficiently; these are not for carrying charcoal, for Boda Boda, I appeal to the RDCs, the DISOs who check on behalf of the central government to look out. It would be funny if there’s a disease outbreak in a sub county and the motorbike is not there, taking some people for some other technical private activities that’s corruption” Said Min. Frank Tumwebaze.

Frank Tumwebaze added that the Ministry’s plan is to see at least two motorcycles per Sub County with one meant to handle the surveillance and reporting of livestock disease outbreaks and another for the crops.
