KABALE: Over 70 million shillings have been raised by the alumni of Kigezi College Butobere under the Siniya Academic Fund program as part of the Siniya Day celebrations.

This was observed at the official launch of the program aimed at raising 300 million shillings to support the struggling students, in response to the decline of the school’s enrollment with an event held on Saturday at the school premises.

Moses Turyomurugyendo Ntahobaari, the Chairman Board of Governors, revealed that private schools have continuously swindled good performing students in other schools, particularly sub candidates from humble families, giving them bursaries.

Turyomurugyendo added that the government, through the Ministry of Education and Sports, allocated 3 million shillings to the school, but due to unmet qualifications required by the ministry, the funds were returned to the treasury, lamented that the money would have been used to offer bursaries to Students.

The Siniya Alumni Council Chairperson Counsel Elvis Twenda, noted by the time they assumed office the enrollment rose to over 300 from 120 students but later declined again.

Twenda added that the school management sought to renovate the school structures and applied to the Ministry of Education and Sports for the cause but the government halted the process due to the licensing issue and the funds bounced back.

The Head Teacher of Kigezi College Butobere, Justus Matsiko, stated that the school management has successfully fostered peace, harmony, and stability within the school community, which will ultimately lead to academic excellence.

Justus Matsiko expressed gratitude to the alumni for their support, noting that with joint efforts, the success and glory of the school will soon be restored.

Kabale District Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Godfrey Nyakahuma presiding over as the guest of honor noted that discipline is the key to academic excellence thus urging the students to keep discipline if they want to succeed academically.

The RDC reassured the audience that the government is committed to rehabilitating traditional schools like Kigezi College Butobere and other schools and further charged the management to sort the unresolved issues to have the funds provided back.
