KCCA Boss Sharifah Warns Solid Waste Managers on Timely Garbage Collection.

KAMPALA: The Executive Director Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Ms. Sharifah Buzeki and her deputy Benon Kigenyi have made an impromptu inspection around the city.

With the inspection major focused on the City Markets the two KCCA bosses oversaw the evacuation of accumulated garbage in the city, with a particular focus on the performance of private garbage collection companies.

The inspection was also aimed at establishing first-hand facts on solid waste management, hot spots, challenges and how best it can be managed.

In her remarks, Ms. Sharifah Buzeki cautioned the solid waste managers on prompt collection of garbage from the collection centers to avoid disrupting business.

It should be remembered that Ms.Sharifah together with Benon was appointed in the office after the arrest of the then ED Dorothy Kisaka and D/ED David Luyimbazi After the investigations into the Kiteezi landslide tragedy last year.

The two former KCCA Bosses are facing charges ranging from 35 counts of manslaughter and 22 counts of causing grievous harm to the victims of the Kiteezi incident that claimed the lives of over 30 people.

They are also accused of ignoring multiple warnings about the imminent risk of a disaster, including the potential for a garbage slide, and failing to decommission the landfill or take action to protect nearby communities.

The charges further allege that the officials did not evacuate or warn residents of the impending dangers, nor did they take prompt steps to handle the potential risk of loss of life.
