Vice Chancellor Prof. Joy Constance Kwesiga noted that programs with first time graduates at Kabale University’s 9th graduation include Bachelors degree in Anesthesia & Critical Care, Masters in Education Psychology, Masters of Tourism and Hospitality, Masters of Information technology, Masters of Science in Mathematics and Masters of Arts in Linguistics.
She said that other ongoing PHD programs that were started at Kabale University in 2020, include PHD in Agriculture, PHD in Engineering, and PHD in Medicine.
Prof. Kwesiga attributed the University’s growth and development to the Government’s acceptance to take it up as one of the Nine regional Public Universities in the country.
She further explained that because of Government’s take over Kabale University’s Student enrollment and the number of staff members had rapidly grown.
“In 2001 when this University opened its gates, we had only 42 students, but now we have over 6000 ,” she said, adding that the Human resource department had also expanded to over 500 members of staff with at least 200 PHD holders.
However, the V.C said that despite improvements in physical infrastructure since Government’s take over, they were facing a challenge of limited teaching space given the rapid increase in students enrollment .
ABOUT KABALE UNIVERSITY.
The South Western Uganda based institution started as a Private University with only 42 students in 2001 and later obtained the licence to operate as a Community University in 2006.
In 2014, the institution got Charter and was officially taken over as a Public institution in 2015. Since then a number of academic programs have been introduced, and Government has been releasing funds to boost the institution’s capacity in both infrastructural development and staff recruitment.
However, the Staffing level is still below expected Standard according to the authorities.
“We are now about 500 but we need to reach at least 1000 members of Staff in order to manage the growing number of students,” Prof. Kwesiga said.
