Health Workers in Custody Over Theft of Drugs in Kisoro
KISORO: Police in Kisoro have taken two health workers into custody for questioning regarding the theft of an unspecified quantity of drugs from Maregamo Health Center III’s drug store.
The suspects, identified as Askari Namara Patrick and lab assistant Habwomuremye Gadi, were on duty the night of the incident.
Sources have it that two nurses and an askari were on duty on the night of January 19, 2025 and in the next morning, they handed over to the incoming day shift staff, who discovered the break-in at the store.
The facility’s in-charge, Madam Dusingize Hylon, 27, was promptly notified and alerted the district supervisors before reporting the matter to the Kisoro Central Police station.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Police Spokesperson confirmed that the police swiftly arrested the suspects and conducted a search of their premises, although no stolen items were recovered.
Maate stated that inquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the break-in and the stolen drugs.
The incident highlights concerns about the security of medical facilities and the potential risks related to stolen medications.
The police are working to ensure that those responsible are held accountable and that measures are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
