Mr President, Ugandans need swift action against the “criminal gangs”

President Yoweri Museveni’s recent admission of a “criminal gang” within his government that influenced the express penalties system (EPS) raises serious concerns about the integrity of his administration.

While the suspension of the EPS following public outcry may seem like a step in the right direction, it is overshadowed by the troubling implications of his revelations. If there are indeed individuals within the government manipulating policies for personal gain, it is a clear signal that the very foundation of governance in Uganda is compromised.

For years, President Museveni has promised to tackle corruption, yet the public continues to witness a disheartening cycle of empty rhetoric and unfulfilled commitments. The exorbitant fees imposed under the EPS—some exceeding Shs 2 million for minor offenses—indicate a system designed not for justice but for profit.

The fact that these penalties were added last minute, after the context was validated, indicates a serious lack of oversight and accountability. How can citizens trust a government that appears to be operating in the shadows, influenced by unseen forces? The president’s acknowledgment of foul play raises even more questions.

Why has he not acted against these alleged criminals? If he knows who they are, the public deserves transparency and swift action. It is not enough to merely make statements; he must demonstrate a commitment to rooting out corruption.

The continued presence of corrupt individuals undermines public trust and hampers the efficacy of government projects, leading to stagnation and frustration among citizens. Moreover, the EPS project has exposed glaring vulnerabilities, such as the potentia surrender of Uganda’s security information to foreign entities.

This is not just a matter of fiscal irresponsibility; it is a fundamental breach of national security. Ignoring such warnings only exacerbates the problem, allowing corruption to flourish unchecked. The time for action is now.

The president must not only disclose the names of those involved but take decisive steps to remove them from positions of power. It is imperative to implement stringent measures that ensure accountability and transparency in all government operations.

This includes establishing independent oversight bodies that can investigate and address corruption without interference. President Museveni must walk the talk on corruption.

The citizens of Uganda deserve a government that prioritizes their welfare over the interests of a few. If the president is genuinely committed to fighting corruption, he must act decisively and transparently.
