Thieves make off with Mayuge church music system, ornaments

The police in Busoga East are investigating a case of theft after unidentified assailants broke into St. Matia Mulumba Catholic Church in Kyebando Cell, Mayuge town council, stealing the music system, musical instruments, and sacred ornaments.

The break-in, discovered during routine preparations for mass, has shocked members of the congregation and raised concerns about the growing trend of crime targeting places of worship.

According to Fr. Allan Kamugisha, the assistant parish priest, ushers were the first to notice that several items on the pulpit were missing. He suspects the thieves may have drugged the church’s local guards, rendering them unconscious to carry out the robbery undetected.

“We hope they encounter religious teachers who will help transform them into law-abiding citizens,” he said.

Agnes Makere, a long-time church member, lamented the apparent loss of reverence for holy places. “In a world where abnormal things are regarded as normal, many no longer have reverence for altars in places of worship. Some people now boldly steal from these sacred spaces,” she said.

Another congregant, Mirabu Nabirye, recalled a time when churches were protected by community trust alone.

“Back then, churches never needed security guards,” she said. “Today, things have changed. We now need to invest in surveillance systems like CCTV to deter such acts.”

Busoga East Police spokesperson Michael Kafayo confirmed that a formal investigation is underway. “We are following up on the matter, and arrests will be made in the shortest time possible,” he said.

No arrests have been made, but the police say they are pursuing several leads and have promised to bring the culprits to justice.
