One dead, several injured in accident involving MP Aeku’s campaign vehicle

One person has died and several others sustained injuries following an accident involving a campaign vehicle for Soroti County MP Patrick Aeku, a National Resistance Movement (NRM) aspirant in the ongoing party primaries.
The tragic incident occurred in Kamuda sub-county, Soroti district, where a crowd had gathered to receive cash handouts from Aeku’s campaign team. According to Paul Eupa, an eyewitness, the vehicle lost control and overturned in the middle of the crowd.
In the commotion, Samuel Okello reportedly fell from the moving vehicle and was fatally run over. Benard Eweru, chairperson of Aeku’s campaign team, confirmed the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
“While the campaign had concluded successfully, it’s unfortunate that one of our supporters succumbed to injuries related to the accident,” Eweru said.
He added that the team was attending to the injured and liaising with the deceased’s family to support burial arrangements. Soroti District Police Commander (DPC) Moses Olang confirmed that Okello’s body had been retrieved and that a postmortem examination would be conducted. He also revealed that the campaign vehicle involved was missing and the driver had not yet been located.
“We are actively investigating the matter as we have not yet located the vehicle involved in the accident, and the driver is still at large,” said Olang.
