EC Sets Voter Eligibility Deadline for 2026 Elections
NATIONAL: The Chairperson of Uganda’s Electoral Commission Justice Simon Byabakama has confirmed that Ugandans who turn 18 years old after February 10, 2025, will not be eligible to vote in the 2026 general elections.
Byabakama made this revelation while appearing before the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee during the consideration of the Commission’s 2025/26 Budget Framework Paper.
He emphasized that only Ugandans who will have attained the age of 18 by February 10, 2025, will be included in the Voters Register.
This move is part of the Electoral Commission’s efforts to ensure a smooth and organized electoral process.
The Commission has also announced plans to update the National Voters Register, a process that is scheduled to take place from January 20 to February 10, 2025.
As Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, the Electoral Commission’s announcements provide clarity on voter eligibility and the electoral process.
The decision is aimed at providing the Commission with enough time to prepare the National Voters’ Register and decide the number of ballot papers to print ahead of the elections.
