Six arrested over murder in NRM elections chaos

Six individuals have been arrested in connection with the death of Peter Kaluya, a resident of Bulubude village in Malongo sub-county, Mayuge district, following post-election violence.
The suspects Abdullah Mateeka, Karim Kiwanuka, Jamiru Opili, Yasin Tibiita, Halima Nabirye, and Aisha Mutesi are currently detained at Mayuge Central police station on charges of murder and attempted murder.
According to police, the violence broke out after Tuesday’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) village structure elections, in which Isaac Lwakala was declared winner over his rival Khuzaima Wante.
Supporters of Wante reportedly turned violent, assaulting the presiding officer and seizing the declaration forms. Kaluya, who was among bystanders that helped the presiding officer escape the mob, became a target of the enraged crowd and was severely beaten.
He died while being rushed to Iganga General Hospital. Busoga East Police spokesperson Michael Kafayo confirmed the arrests, stating that detectives have gathered evidence implicating the suspects.
