About 40 pregnant women die of preeclampsia disease annually in Kabale.

KABALE: Kabale District Healthy department heads have reported soaring in pre-eclampsia disease with approximately 40 pregnant women dying of the disease annually.

Updating the Media on the ongoing preeclampsia disease awareness week on Wednesday the Kabale District Health Officer Dr. Gilbert Arinetwe Mateeka said that out of the four maternal deaths that happen, one die due to preeclampsia.

He noted that mothers with multiple pregnancies, those with pre-existing conditions like diabetes, hypertension are particularly at risk of contracting the disease.

The Kabale District Health Educator Alfred Besigensi said that the Health Department, in collaboration with Uganda Health Activity (UHA), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and other organizations, have so far launched a public awareness campaign to reduce the number of maternal deaths to preeclampsia.

Dr. Alfred noted that untreated preeclampsia could result in eclampsia (convulsions), brain hemorrhage, kidney failure, and excessive bleeding in pregnant women.

Preeclampsia is one high blood pressure (hypertension) disorder that can occur during pregnancy and in babies, can cause fetal distress, poor growth.
