Police disperse PM Nabbanja 'slapper' supporters in Kakumiro

The police in Kakumiro district dispersed protesters on Thursday afternoon who were demonstrating against the arrest and remand of Onesimus Twinamasiko, the NRM parliamentary flag bearer for Bugangaizi East.

Twinamasiko was arrested and charged with assaulting Prime Minister Robinnah Nabbanja. The alleged incident occurred on July 17, 2025, during the announcement of NRM primary results at the party’s Kakumiro district offices.

Yesterday Wednesday, Twinamasiko was arraigned before the Kibaale Chief Magistrates’ court, where he pleaded not guilty. His bail application was denied, and he was remanded until September 10.

Hundreds of Twinamasiko’s supporters from Kisiita town council and sub-county took to the streets on Thursday, demanding his immediate release. The demonstrators, including youth, women, and the elderly, engaged in running battles with the police who had blocked their protest.

The protesters argued that Twinamasiko’s arrest was politically motivated and a tactic to prevent him from being nominated for the parliamentary seat. They appealed to President Museveni to personally intervene in what they described as internal conflicts among top NRM leaders in the district.

According to Peter Muyemba, the officer-in-charge of Kisiita police station, the demonstration was illegal as the organizers had not officially notified the police. He stated that the police would not allow the protesters to cause chaos over a matter that is already before the court.
