Kajjansi police station accused of extortion

Kajjansi police station is under public scrutiny following fresh allegations of extortion in connection with a reported rape case.

The accusations, which have gained traction on social media, suggest that officers are bypassing standard legal procedures to seize property from suspects. The controversy began over the weekend when a 22-year-old hairdresser reported that she was drugged and raped by two men, identified as Simon Ngobi and a “Chairman,” at a house in Canaan Estates.

According to the victim’s account, she had met Ngobi at a nearby venue before visiting him at his home. After the case was filed, officers from the Kajjansi station reportedly went to the scene.

Witnesses, however, claim that instead of arresting the suspects, the police raided the home and seized personal property, including a car and laptops, despite the suspects not being present.

Media personality Andrew Kyamagero shared their account on social media, criticizing the officers’ actions.

“A man accused of rape, before any medical confirmation, before any lawful procedure, had his car, laptops, and personal property seized from his home in his absence. This was not an arrest. It was a raid, in the rush to extort,” he wrote.

The post also claimed that neighbours had recorded the incident and that Kajjansi police had a reputation for such “schemes.”

In a statement, Luke Owoyesigyire, Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, dismissed the extortion claims. He argued that it would be impossible to extort a suspect who is still at large.

Owoyesigyire confirmed that crime scene officers had collected relevant exhibits, including bedsheets, HIV testing kits, and the vehicle allegedly used to transport the victim, a silver-grey Subaru with registration number UBP 267F.

He explained that these items were seized as part of the ongoing investigation. Owoyesigyire urged anyone with video footage of police misconduct to come forward and promised that the officers involved would be subjected to an investigation and disciplinary action if found guilty.

He also called on the two suspects, Simon Ngobi and the “Chairman,” to report to the police station to provide their statements.
