End of the road for Uganda Cranes

Uganda Cranes’ fairytale journey at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) came to a close after a narrow 1-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal at the Mandela National Stadium.

Oumar Ba struck the decisive blow in the 61st minute, finishing off a fine move orchestrated by Libasse Guèye. Despite enjoying large spells of possession and creating several half-chances, Uganda could not find a way past Senegal’s resilient defense.

The result ended Uganda’s best-ever run at the tournament, as the Cranes reached the quarterfinal stage for the first time in their history. Uganda dominated possession with 56.7% compared to Senegal’s 42.5%, but struggled to convert control into goals.

Senegal, known for their defensive discipline and physicality, absorbed wave after wave of Ugandan pressure, frustrating the home side. Coach Morley Byekwaso responded to the setback with bold substitutions, bringing on fresh attacking options.

Joel Sserunjogi, back from suspension, tried to spark creativity in midfield, while forwards pressed desperately for an equalizer. Yet Senegal’s backline stood unyielding, repelling every attack until the final whistle.

The final whistle confirmed Senegal’s progression to the semifinals, where they will face Morocco. In the other bracket, Madagascar awaits the winner between Sudan and Algeria. For Uganda, however, the elimination did little to dampen the pride of fans.

The Cranes not only carried East Africa’s flag after the exits of Tanzania and Kenya but also showcased resilience and growth that hint at a brighter future on the continental stage. Allan Okello emerged as Uganda’s standout performer, finishing as the team’s top scorer with three goals in the tournament.
