Over 40 killed in suspected ADF rebel attack on Church retreat in DRC

At least 43 people have been killed in an attack suspected to have been carried out by Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels in Komanda, Ituri Province, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning at around 1:00 am, according to survivors.

The assailants reportedly targeted locals gathered for a Catholic Church retreat crusade, taking worshippers by surprise. Victims were reportedly hacked and shot to death, while the attackers also burned the church hall and neighbouring homes.

Survivors say the dead include 32 worshippers and nine children. By the time security authorities arrived at the scene, the attackers had already fled and taken several other victims as hostages into the bush.
