Afrigo band, Sophie Nantongo bring golden oldies to Guvnor

Club Guvnor’s Friday Night Live monthly show never disappoints when it comes to throwing a party.
And with Afrigo band at the centre of everything, the thrill is usually unmatched. The last edition held on June 27, saw the band treat its fans to its timeless classics, yet somehow making the music sound like they were performing it for the very first time. Only Afrigo band can pull that off.
This edition also saw I&M Bank join the night as the new sponsor, bringing together not just the older folks who are presumed to be the biggest fans of Afrigo’s music, but also some young blood, who appreciate good music.
The night kicked off with mixes from Charlie Lubega’s in-house DJs, setting the mood with a blend of Ugandan hits, including urban classics and a few recent favourites that got revellers whet the musical appetite, Afrigo stepped on stage at 11pm to do what Moses Matovu and his team do best.
The band wasted no time kicking off their first set with the 1988 anthem, Abaana b’Afrigo followed by Joanita Kawalya’s Jim Wange, among others. At midnight, the band turned the heat up with Rachael Magoola – now also a member of parliament – taking the lead on vocals.
Emaali, a beloved anthem at traditional parties across the country, dropped and instantly got all the revellers to their feet. Moments later, when she sang her breakthrough hit Obangaina, the party truly kicked off. To spice up the night, veteran songstress Sophie Nantongo came on stage.
With classics like Nkwagala Nnyo and Love Super, Nantongo took the lovers in the house back in time, as they grooved on in style. Her performance got the crowd singing along and added a fresh, soulful vibe to the night.
Tshaka Mayanja, the marketing lead at Guvnor, expressed his delight at how Friday Night Live continues to grow into a key platform for celebrating Ugandan music and connecting generations through shared experiences.
“This is more than music. This is culture, memories, and a celebration of who we are as Ugandans,” Mayanja said. The Friday Night Live, held every last Friday of the month, will return on July 25.
