MTN bails out Toro Babies Home with Shs 10m medical bill payment

After months of grappling with a Shs 10 million medical debt, Toro Babies Home in Fort Portal City has received a significant lifeline thanks to the generosity of well-wishers led by MTN Uganda.
On Friday, a delegation from MTN, headed by chief executive officer Sylvia Mulinge, visited the home and cleared the outstanding medical bill. In addition, they donated another Shs 10 million to support the facility’s future healthcare needs. The team also delivered assorted items including foodstuffs, diapers, soap, and other essential supplies, spending time interacting with the children.
The support comes at a critical time for the home, which provides shelter and care for abandoned and vulnerable infants. Soaring medical costs had begun to strain operations and threaten the quality of care.
Ruth Tumusiime, the home’s matron, said the debt had accumulated over the past two years due to the children’s frequent medical needs. She added that beyond healthcare, the facility is struggling with food shortages and delayed adoptions, especially for children with physical disabilities.
She revealed that the home is at full capacity, caring for 50 children aged between 0 and 5 years. Fort Portal City MP Alex Ruhunda, who was also present, applauded MTN’s support and called for greater responsibility among the youth.
He urged the youth not bring children into the world if they’re not financially ready. He further appealed to the people of Tooro sub-region and beyond to continue supporting homes that care for vulnerable children and the elderly.
