Recovered stolen cattle in Nakasongola rise to 42
The number of recovered heads of cattle in Nakasongola district has risen to 42 following a recent police operation targeting livestock theft rings in the region.
The latest recovery of four cows on Thursday, June 19, came nearly a week after police had earlier recovered 38 cattle and arrested ten suspects linked to a series of night-time raids on kraals across Wabinyonyi, Lwampanga, Migyeera sub-counties, and Nakasongola Town Council.
Savannah Regional police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima said the intelligence-led operations were launched in response to an upsurge in livestock theft reports in the region. The Friday, June 13 operation led to the recovery of cattle in the villages of Katitiza, Kansirye, Kakonde, Kitego, and Sasira, all within Wabinyonyi sub-county.
Ten suspects were apprehended, including three previously wanted individuals: Alex Kimeeze of Katitiza village, and Julius Wandera and Patrick Bebwa, both from Kansirye village. Twiineamazima noted that the trio already had case files related to earlier cattle thefts and would face additional charges when they appear before the Nakasongola Magistrate’s court on Friday, June 20.
The most recent recovery of four cows was made at the home of suspect Julius Wandera in Kansirye village. All recovered cattle were transferred to Nakasongola Central Police Station, where owners have been asked to present proof of ownership for verification and reclamation.
Patrick Lugonzi, the LCI chairman of Namayonjo village and one of the victims, said the thefts have devastated the livelihoods of local pastoralists. Lugonzi himself lost all 16 of his cattle.
He urged police to increase patrols along feeder roads commonly used to transport stolen cattle to urban markets in Kampala, Luweero, Masindi, and other districts. According to data from Savannah regional police, 492 head of cattle were reported stolen between September 2024 and March 2025 across the districts of Luweero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola. Of these, 310 have so far been recovered.
