Sweetly Defined: familiar taste, new setting

Sweetly Defined might not appreciate being compared to Café Javas (CJs), but the resemblance is undeniable.

From the aesthetics to the funky, laid-back décor, even the serving plates, they all scream CJs. Whether it is the lighting, furniture arrangement, service or overall vibe, it is either the same interior designer or someone heavily inspired by them.

Located in the revived Metroplex Shopping Centre in Naalya, Sweetly Defined is one of the latest eateries breathing life back into the once-forgotten mall. It has become a welcome pitstop for moviegoers before or after a screening.

Families will also appreciate the children’s outdoor play area. But you pay for the ambience, as most dishes are priced above Shs 40,000. Chicken lovers are spoilt for choice with chicken goujon platter, chicken saltimbocca, jerk chicken, Vietnamese chicken, chicken prego, chicken Milanese, you name it. Seafood enthusiasts are also covered, with lemon-infused lobsters, prawns, shrimp, tilapia, and salmon on the menu.

The Observer tried out the Shs 40,000 Vietnam Chicken, described as grilled chicken breast glazed with Vietnamese sauce, served with a side of mashed potatoes, rice, or chips/ wedges.

At first glance, it won’t stop the traffic. It looks like your typical grilled chicken found in any Ugandan home on a Sunday brunch. But the first bite says otherwise. The marinade’s aroma is lovely, and it infuses the chicken with a flavourful tang.

Slow-roasted, allowing the flavours to permeate every sinew and fibre, the chicken has a beautiful golden finish and savoury glaze. While a food critic might find it lacking in succulence, the average diner will likely find it sweetly tangy and full of flavour.

The mashed potatoes had a slightly ‘off’, rubbery texture, but the accompanying sauce made up for it, offering a perfect balance to the dish.
