Kabojja teacher faces new charges over sexual abuse of 11-year-old boy

The state has filed additional criminal charges against Godfrey Muwumuza, 43, a teacher at Kabojja Junior School, accused of sexually abusing an 11-year-old male pupil during a school trip earlier this month.
Muwumuza, who was initially charged at Buganda Road court with attempted aggravated homosexuality, now faces a second count of indecent assault of a minor, contrary to Section 136 of the Penal Code Act.
According to the amended charge sheet presented before chief magistrate Ronald Kayizzi, Muwumuza is alleged to have unlawfully and indecently assaulted the 11-year-old boy on May 4 and 5, 2025, while en route between Kampala and Mbarara.
The Penal Code Act stipulates that any person who indecently assaults a boy under the age of 18 commits a felony and is liable to up to 14 years in prison upon conviction. Prosecutors allege that the abuse occurred both during the journey to and from the school tour.
The updated charges follow new evidence uncovered during ongoing investigations. Under Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act, aggravated homosexuality, particularly involving minors is punishable by life imprisonment or, in extreme cases, the death penalty.
Even attempts to commit such offences attract sentences of up to 14 years in prison. The case has sparked widespread concern among parents and the Kabojja Junior School community.
The administration recently addressed the matter through a message to parents’ forums, calling the incident “an unwelcome disruption.” In the communication, the school noted that it would not comment further as the matter is before court, but emphasized the importance of upholding due process and the presumption of innocence.
Parents were also urged to handle the topic delicately around children and to refrain from public commentary that could affect investigations or judicial proceedings. Muwumuza remains in custody as the case continues.
